WIC

Also called: Women, Infants, and Children

What it means

A federal nutrition program for pregnant women, new mothers (up to 6 months postpartum, or 1 year if breastfeeding), infants, and children under 5. WIC provides specific healthy foods — milk, eggs, cereal, juice, beans, peanut butter, fruits and vegetables — through vouchers or an EBT card usable at participating stores. Income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. Recipients of Medicaid, SNAP, or Temporary Assistance qualify automatically. WIC also provides breastfeeding support, nutrition counseling, and referrals to other health and social services. In Monroe County, WIC is administered through the county health department.

When you might hear this

You hear this when a pregnant woman, new mother, or parent of a young child asks about food help. WIC provides free healthy food, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education for specific populations.

What to ask

  • Where is the nearest WIC office?
  • What documents do I need for my first appointment?
  • Do I qualify automatically because I receive Medicaid or SNAP?
  • What foods are covered?
  • How long can my child stay on WIC?
