IEP

Also called: Individualized Education Program

What it means

A written plan developed by the school and the parents that describes the special education services a child with a disability will receive. It includes the child's current abilities, yearly goals, the specific services provided (special instruction, speech therapy, counseling, etc.), and how progress will be measured. The IEP is reviewed every year. Parents are full members of the team that writes it and must agree before it starts.

When you might hear this

You hear this when a child with a disability is getting special education services in school. The IEP is the written plan that says exactly what the school has to provide.

What to ask

  • What services does the IEP include?
  • When is the next IEP meeting?
  • What are the goals and how is progress measured?
  • What if I disagree with what the school is offering?
